Children and Contact Lenses

Recently the fact that a child could wear contact lenses instead of eyeglasses was comparable to an initiation ceremony. The new researches have shown that even 8-11 years old children are able to wear and take care of contact lenses just as adults. Some people say that it is not advisable to wear contacts before 12-13. Now it has been proved that even younger myopic children are able to wear both soft and rigid lenses. The main reason why experts don’t advise an earlier wearing is that they have no trust in the sense of responsibility of young people. But other studies confirmed that even 8-11 years old children are skilled enough to handle lenses on their own. Currently researchers are analyzing  the level of self-confidence, learning results, sport activity and interpersonal interaction among children  to compare those who wear eyeglasses and those with contact lenses. It has already been proven that children would like to wear contact lenses simply for the same reasons as adults wear them, to see better and look nicer.

Being a responsible parent you always want to make sure that all the things bought to your child are meant to make his life easier and healthier. The contact lenses are no exception to this. There are some basic reasons why parents would like their children to wear contacts.

If wearing lenses, they won't be hold up while doing exercises, playing or dancing. When being active, contact lenses don't cloud over or slip down from the nose. There is no pressure behind the child’s ears. Every child wants to look better and this gives them a huge self confidence.

Reading all these positive features you might wonder if your child is sufficiently responsible to wear contact lenses. You can find the answer by yourself if you closely take a look at how the child handles the daily tasks. If your kid needs repeated reminders for everyday duties, he may not be prepared for the responsibility of wearing and caring for contact lenses. But if he handles such duties well, he may be an outstanding candidate for them. Usually children familiarize themselves well to wearing the lenses because of their flexible character.

Kids also build up fewer complications than adults. Younger people heal more rapidly and have a  stronger immune system. In addition, children are likely to respect medical instructions and therefore have fewer problems with over-wearing the lenses or not using the right care solutions.

Myopia is another big motivation for your children to wear contact lenses. If your child is nearsighted think about fitting him with rigid lenses to slow the development of myopia. Many eye care practitioners consider that rigid contact lenses may put a stop to reaching the full nearsightedness that eyeglasses or soft contact lenses would bring.

So, what you should do before letting your child to wear contact lenses is to weigh all the advantages and disadvantages that contact lenses offer. Ask a doctor’s opinion about what he or she thinks about your child to wear contact lenses and only after that buy one for him/her.
