CORNEA FAQ's
Please click on the below list of questions to see the answers.
Qts.: I had a mild stroke leaving the right side of my face and eye numb, I then developed a severe dry eye and also scarred the cornea severely. It's been a year and a half since then and to the naked eye my eye looks fine but a little bit cloudy. I can see a little out of it like hand waving in front of it or a shadow of a person walking by or light. Now according to my ophthalmologist everything is fine inside my eye even after doing a B scan. She says that I need a cornea replacement and my eyesight should be restored. Is there any kind of eye drops or anything that would help rebuild the cornea or make the cloudiness go away or both?

Ans.: Although you have sent a very elaborate description, it still does not help me opine on your eye as we usually do the same by commenting on the doctor’s notes or clinical reports.

However, I do feel that you need to be seen by a corneal specialist who would be the right doctor to approach regarding the medical line treatment if any and he can also advise you regarding the most advanced treatments available today for your condition, even in corneal transplants as progress has been made from traditional transplants too.

Qts.: I've had a Corneal eye ulcer (inflammation) almost two months ago, I had to take some anti-biotic eye drops to reduce the infections and to finally heal but my eye doctor says that I cannot use my contact lenses for a little while, He says I have a little scar on both of my eyes from my contacts. I am not sure if scars can be healed but if so, how long can my eyes be suitable to be worn by contacts again? I cannot stand wearing glasses again. Someone says 6 months or so, but I'm not sure. I have seen an answer about the tissues on the deeper layers of the eye that may take some time to heal, how long can the official eye be healed from the former ulcer? Also, another quick question- Can scars heal on your eye?

Ans.:The nature of the corneal scar, its size, depth, location is important. This can only be seen through an eye examination. If not healed and some activity is still happening, you may permanently damage the cornea by subjecting it to further compromise with contact lenses which sit and touch this area directly. You may also consider LASIK before it is too late and the scar interferes with your eligibility to the procedure if you do not want the option of glasses and if lenses are detrimental for your eyes. Read more about this procedure on www.lasikindia.in.

Qts.: I had ulcerations on my eye, after a short while they healed and now i only have slight scarring, is it still possible for me to get effective laser eye surgery?

Ans.: Usually, scar tissues need to be evaluated to know the thickness of cornea involved and also the location of the same. The extent of corneal scarring determines your eligibility for the procedure and also if laser procedure is not feasible, there may be other options available, but it is only your check up which can tell you this. You can read about the advanced LASIK technology on www.lasikindia.in.

Qts.:About four days ago I wore my contacts too long and woke up with red eye couldn’t see and was sore to light. The opt. said that I have a cornea ulcer. My vision is slowly getting better and it feels like everything is coming together but i still have some blurriness will that go away in time you think?

Ans.: Yes, it will, however in future, please be very careful with lenses, otherwise you will make the cornea unfit for even LASIK in future and also contact lenses, and your only option would be then to use glasses. See your eye specialist and follow his advise.

Qts.: I had PRK over three years ago with the Alcon 6000 laser and had a severe case of corneal hazing.  I still wear glasses and they do not totally correct my vision (20/40 at best with a 5.25 & 5.75 prescription).  My doctor keeps telling me to come back every six months and insists that it will get better - but I’m getting a little tired of hearing the same thing.  I have found no instances online of anyone with hazing for this long and don’t know what my options are.  Have you ever seen a patient with this issue and did the hazing ever clear?  I also have ghosting and a loss of vision at night.

Ans.: I am sorry to hear about your unfavorable outcome. Corneal haze needs to be treated in the immediate post procedure period. If you say 3 years have passed, it is unlikely to 'get better' unless something can be done about it.

Firstly you can e mail me your current eye check details esp. the condition of the cornea, findings of the doctor, preferably Topography maps of the eyes.

You can send the same to dranandf@lasikindia.in. Some cases can be retreated, however with good technology and good expertise..

Qts.: 6 months ago I had viral infections with adenovirus and developed keratoconjuctivitis. Unfortunately at the same time I was suffering from Bells palsy, which was the initial reason I visited the ophthalmologist and got the infection with the adenovirus. My infection had complications as now, after 5 months I have a blurred vision. I went to many doctors, getting different answers from each. I was told I can remove the corneal lesions by laser, that I should not do anything about it and it will come and go for many years and that it will leave after 2 years and so on. The vision now is blurred all the time and when I used cortisone some days ago as one of the doctors suggested it only got worse and remained like that until now? Is there any treatment about this condition?

Ans.: Viral infections with adenovirus which develop keratoconjuctivitis can sometimes last for months to years. The laser unfortunately does not remove the lesions entirely.

You need to get the Bell's palsy checked just in case it's worsening the situation with dryness.
