What is Trichiasis/ in-turned eyelash?
The eyelid margins are lined by fine hair (eyelashes) which are directed away from the surface of the eye. Trichiasis is a condition wherein the lashes are directed towards the eye.
What is the cause of Trichiasis?
This is a common condition, seen in both children and adults. It may result from inflammation, trauma, post surgery or be present since birth.
What are the symptoms of Trichiasis?
This may lead to irritation to the eyes, abrasion, ulceration and even scarring, which may affect the vision.
How is Trichiasis treated?
Pulling out the affected lash may provide short term relief. For a permanent solution, you may need a small surgical procedure which permanently treats the hair follicle preventing it from re growing. Depending on the number, position and cause, Dr Sneha Shah, our oculoplastic surgeon will decide to either use electro-epilation, laser, cryotherapy or excision to treat it.
Occasionally more than one procedure may be required to completely alleviate the symptoms.
