Are cataracts found only in older people?

Cataracts are commonly seen in older people over the age of 60 years. They are rarely seen in infants and young adults.

My doctor says I have to wait a while before removing my cataract. Why?

A cataract surgery is usually performed when the cataract interferes significantly with your vision and your daily routine. You need to visit the eye doctor regularly to monitor its progress.

How is a cataract removed?

Cataract surgery is a microscopic surgery usually performed under local or topical anaesthesia. The cloudy lens is removed by Phacoemulsification, which is a micro-incision technique of cataract surgery wherein a probe breaks the cataract intotiny pieces and sucks them out. If a foldable implant is inserted the incision size is smaller (2.8 – 3.0 mm) as compared to an approximately 5 mm incision to accommodate a non-foldable lens. Both incisions are self-sealing and need no stitches. Our eye doctor will help you decide as to which lens should suit you best.

I’ve heard that lasers are used in cataract surgery?

We perform the most advanced cataract surgery which in lay man terms is called ‘Laser cataract surgery’ although the true medical term is ‘Phaco emulsification’. The common person calls it laser cataract surgery because of ‘no stitches’. YAG lasers are sometimes used to create a clear opening in the lens-containing membrane, if it becomes cloudy after a few months following cataract surgery.

Will I need glasses after a cataract surgery?

This would depend on the type of intraocular lenses (IOLs) used for you. The advanced intra ocular lenses such as multifocal or accommodating IOLs greatly reduce dependency on glasses and in most cases even reading glasses can be avoided. Rarely does anyone have to wear thick eyeglasses now.

What is the cost of cataract surgery?

The cataract operation cost in Mumbai varies depending on the type of procedure and the type of intraocular lens used as a replacement.

What symptoms should alert me to see a Retinal Specialist?

The most common symptoms of retinal disease experienced by our patients include floaters and flashes, peripheral shadows, sudden loss of vision, or blurry/distorted vision.

Will my eyes be dilated on every visit? And for how long?

Yes. In order to best evaluate your eyes, your pupils must dilate so the doctor can see the retina. They will stay dilated and vision may be blurred for approximately 2 hours and longer for some patients.

Can I drive after my retinal eye checkup?

No. For your safety, it is better to arrange for someone to drive you home or take public transport.

How long will my visit take?

It will take approximately 45-minutes to 1 ½ hours for a complete eye examination and for any diagnostic tests that are needed.

What is the difference between a vitreo- retinal surgeon and a general ophthalmologist?

A general ophthalmologist is a specialist who performs general eye care including refraction and minor surgery as well as cataract surgery. A retina specialist or surgeon is highly trained in the diagnosis, management, and treatment of retinal problems such as macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, macular holes, macular puckers and retinal detachments. A retina specialist trains for many years beyond medical school: not only for four more years to become a general ophthalmologist, but for two additional years in a “fellowship” program to learn the details of retinal surgery.

You may wonder why we do not have a wide range of fees or LASIK cost displayed on the website like some laser centers. That’s easy. We only do LASIK one way, the way we would want it done for our own family members, many of whom we already have. There are many laser centers in India charging as low as Rs 7,000/- per eye for LASIK which one may end up paying more than Rs 50,000/- for both eyes in other centers with the exact same laser technology! especially in India since not many do technology based research, but just compare prices assuming that the treatment is the same in all centers. We plan and perform your procedure using the best customized plan with the safest technology available anywhere worldwide to help you achieve your personal best vision.
